GetImage Version 2.0 is being produced primarily to
support the new photometric calibrations
of the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS).
In addition, schemes used by GetImage 2.0 for accessing the DSS from
CD-ROM jukeboxes is no longer experimental as was the case for previous versions
of GetImage.
New Features and Bug Fixes
- GetImage now supports the new photometric calibrations
of the DSS. The calibrations are extracted into binary table extensions
of FITS files containing images extracted from the DSS. See Using
the New Features for details on using GetImage with the new photometric
calibrations.
- Getimage now has a well-defined scheme for accessing
the DSS mounted in a CD-ROM jukebox. See Using
the New Features for details on how to setup GetImage for use with a CD-ROM
jukebox.
- Input coordinates are now accepted by GetImage which
have 24 in the hours field of right ascension and 60 in the minutes and seconds
fields of right ascension and arcminutes and arcseconds fields of declination.
- GetImage will now never output coordinates which have
24 in the hours field of right ascension and 60 in the minutes and seconds
fields of right ascension and arcminutes and arcseconds fields of declination.
- A bug which caused images extracted from the tops of
some plates to be "skewed" has been corrected. This bug was actually
corrected in patch "a" to version 1.3.
- A bug which caused erroneous change of case of directory
path names has been corrected.
- A bug which caused erroneous detection of undefined
plate list environment variables has been corrected.
- A bug which caused erroneous allocation of 4 bytes for
each image pixel has been corrected to now properly allocae 2 bytes for each
pixel, so memory allocation for each extracted image is now cut in half.

2.0 Alpha Release
Alpha Release Caveats
Because the current release of GetImage 2.0 is an alpha
release, there are certain short comings of which the user should be aware.
- The documentation for GetImage has not yet been updated
from Version 1.3. The documentation on this WWW page is the only documentation
currently available for information specific to Version 2.0 of GetImage.
- Some modifications planned for GetImage 2.0 have not
yet been completed. These include writing additional informational keywords
to extracted image headers and enhancements to command line options.

2.0 Alpha Release
HEASARC CFITSIO in GetImage
GetImage has been modified with Version 2.0 to utilize
the CFITSIO package for all FITS file operations. The package was developed by
Dr. William D. Pence at HEASARC. The choice to use CFITSIO with GetImage was made
to support the use of FITS file binary table extensions to transport calibration
data such as the new DSS photometric calibrations.
GetImage users do not need to independently obtain the
CFITSIO package. CFITSIO is distributed with the GetImage software for the express
purpose of building the GetImage executable. The GetImage build procedures will
automatically create the required CFITSIO library.
Users wishing to use CFITSIO for purposes other than building
GetImage should obtain the latest version from the
CFITSIO WWW page. This is because the version of CFITSIO distributed with
GetImage may not be the latest available version, but it is the version required
by the current version of GetImage.

2.0 Alpha Release
Using the New Features
Two of the features new to GetImage 2.0 are support
of the new photometric calibrations of the DSS, and a new scheme for extracting
images from the DSS mounted in a CD-ROM jukebox. These new features are
described here because the documentation in the alpha release of GetImage 2.0
is incomplete.
-
Photometric Calibration Support
There are two components required in order for GetImage
2.0 to support the new photometric calibrations:
- The Calibration FITS Files
They are available at
DSS photometric calibrations. There are three calibration files,
one for each of the primary photographic surveys in the DSS. To install
the calibration files, copy them to the headers directory below the GetImage
installation directory.
- A New Plate List File
The new version of the plate list file specifies for
GetImage which calibration FITS file is appropriate for each plate. This
file, called locomp20.lis, is automatically provided with the GetImage
2.0 release.
There are two command line options associated with
the GetImage calibration interface: +cal and +nocal. If +cal is present,
then extracted FITS images will contain the available calibration data.
If +nocal is present, then extracted FITS images will not contain any calibration
data. +cal is the default.
-
CD-ROM Jukebox Support
Past versions of GetImage have included experimental schemes
for accessing the DSS mounted in a CD-ROM jukebox. With version 2.0,
GetImage now has a well-defined scheme for accessing the DSS mounted
in a CD-ROM jukebox.
The new scheme utilizes a path-list file
to specify the location of each disc of the DSS in a jukebox. There
is one record in the path-list file for each disc in the DSS. Each
record consists of two fields. The first field is the volume label of the
disc, and the second field is the path in the file system to the disc mounted
in the jukebox. With your browser set to download as file, a sample path-list
file may be downloaded at
sample path-list file.
To set up GetImage to extract images from the DSS
mounted in a CD-ROM jukebox, edit the sample path-list file as appropriate
for your system, and place the file into the headers directory below the
GetImage installation directory. By default, the path-list file should be
named "jukebox_paths.lis".
The DSS may then be accessed from the jukebox
by invoking GetImage with the "+jukebox" option. If an alternate
name was chosen for the path-list file, it may be accessed by specifying
the file name on the GetImage command line: "+jukebox file.name".

Obtaining the GetImage 2.0 Alpha Release
A compressed tar file of the alpha release of GetImage
2.0 may be obtained at
getimage.tar.Z. You may obtain the release in an OpenVMS backup save set via
anonymous ftp from ftp.stsci.edu in the file getimage_a20.bck from the directory
/software/casb/programs/getimage/dev/ using transfer type backup.
Instructions for installing GetImage may be found after
unpacking the archive file in the files getimage/install.unx and [.GETIMAGE]INSTALL.VMS
for UNIX and OpenVMS system respectively.
