CASB Report October
2002
· Provided NVO Simple Image Access services for DSS archive in support of science demos.
·
Ricky Smart announced the birth of his daughter,
Arcadia Rebbeca Smart, on
· Conrad Sturch is retiring in November.
· Supported several tours of the plate vault and scanning facilities.
·
Final
agreement reached between ODM and ESS on staff assignments.
·
Wil O’Mullane concluded a working visit to develop web services
for CASB archive data.
· Investigated 5 bad guide star alerts. All turned out to be unresolved (on the Schmidt Plate) multiple star systems, classified in GSC1 as single stellar objects. The much higher angular resolution of the HST FGS is able to separate the closely spaced systems. Filed a Bad GS Alert for each of the GSs.
· Continued to update the keywords of the header files.
·
Provided NVO Simple Image Access services for
DSS archive in support of science demos.
· Developed and delivered capability for VOTable loading with selectable color table viewing of morphological parameters into Aladdin visualization tools.
· Coordination with JHU and STScI in support of cluster morphology demonstration is ongoing to develop an NVO portal service to integrate services.
· SOAP web service was built for HST cone search.
· No activity
· Continued scanning the POSS-I O (blue) survey plates.
· Gamma 1 suffered a mechanical failure and will require some maintenance work. This work is expected to be simple and routine, barring any unforeseen problems.
· GAMMA2 continues to operate smoothly.
·
Solved
the problem of writing CDs using PC software on plextor. In the revised procedure, the old premastering software is still run; the resulting img file is copied to plextor and
then renamed to be an iso file, which the PC software
can handle.
·
Expect
to clear the backlog of CDs by the end of the month.
·
Starting
to investigate reported problems with reading data in 5 different DSS regions.
·
Investigating
how to copy data from the MOD archive to the new spinning disk array that may
be available soon. Studying how to mount
this disk such that the VMS produced data is viewable from UNIX.
· Replied to one helpdesk request for support.
·
Unmatched and deleted a small number of plates
from the database in order to reprocess and recalibrate some older POSS 1
data. All plate material (POSS1, POSS2
and quick V) in a small area surrounding the northern galactic pole was
recalibrated loaded and matched for a test of the proper motion algorithm.
·
Continue to work through all the problem plates
for both the northern and southern IVN surveys.
This activity was given slightly higher priority during the previous
several weeks, in order to achieve completion of loading and matching of the IR
survey material.
·
Most of
the available POSSI-O plate scans have been processed
· Completed final testing of a program that will access the current GSC2 database and obtain information needed to create MCO files for calibration purposes.
· Created a PERL script that will automatically run the createMCO application using the GSPC2 and Tycho2 catalogs given an input list of desired MCO files.
· Continuing port of the object classifier application from VMS to Windows 2000.
·
Continuing port of the object classifier
application from VMS to Windows 2000.
Calibrations: Photometry (GSPC-II and DSS-I and -II)
·
Loomis spent 7 nights observing at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos on the
· Data was taken on every night and several of the nights offered excellent observing conditions while weather and dust reduced the observing efficiency on other nights. Part of one night was devoted to a target of opportunity override request for astrometry of a near Earth object. The data are being reduced.
