CASB Report for
December, 1999
·
Improvements
to pipeline procedures plus use of the vastly improved GSPC-II have resulted in
the extremely high rates of photometric recalibration of plates already in
COMPASS.
·
GSC 2.1.0
data delivery in progress
·
No new
GSPRs (Guide Star Problem Reports) were received this period.
·
Completed
generating STIS-BOP year 2000 moving-target charts for Jupiter and Saturn.
Successfully used the new software to extract the necessary images from the
compressed archive for this purpose.
·
Completed
the recalibration of the above 18 STIS-BOP fields using the latest
GSPC-II. This resulted in vastly
improved photometry for the objects contained in these fields.
·
Continued
investigating the requirements for the STIS Bright Object Protection GUI that
will be used by the Contact Scientists when performing the BOP processing of
programs.
·
Continued
scanning the sixth shipment of UKST-IR plates.
Production was low due to continuing problems with GAMMA2.
·
Unpacked a
large shipment of plates from ROE. The
shipment contains more UKST-IR plates plus southern F plates needed to complete
GSC-II.
·
Sent a
shipment of tapes to Cal Tech, including a number of remakes for old tapes that
have become unreadable.
·
GAMMA2
continues to produce unacceptable amounts of shearing between adjacent
multichannel passes. Performed the
planned sequence of engineering scans using grated rulings and subsequent
analysis of this data.
·
Re-did the
setup on GAMMA2 because both the setup and results of the ruling scans were
poor. Initial analysis of the new setup verifies the shear analysis result of
unacceptable inter- pass shear. The
ruling scans show a slight difference in the y pixel size derived from the
interline data vs. the y pixel size derived from inter pass data. Corrections for this problem involve either
(or both) adjustments to the frequency step size or small adjustments to the
beam deflection angle. Both corrections
must be empirically determined from additional ruling scans. These new scans are currently being performed.
·
Damping
adjustments were performed on GAMMA1 resulting in improved performance of the
servos.
·
Awaiting
the receipt, scanning, and compressing of the final plate from Palomar before
the last four J plates can be archived.
·
Completed
analysis of compression methods for the POSSII-N survey. Completed the first
four CDROMs of compressed scans for this survey.
·
Of 38
POSS-I E scans retrieved for archiving to MOD, four have failed checksums on
the rollback. This phenomenon is
unexplained. For now, we are postponing the archiving of the problem scans and
may rescan the plates, if necessary.
·
Continued
to perform QA and maintenance of the DID and GSH file sanctuaries at a low
level of effort. Identified and corrected a small number of anomalous files.
·
No progress
reported in investigation of a GETIMAGE failure with the DSS-I, first reported
by the NAOJ Astronomical Data Analysis Center.
·
Continued
recalibration of plates currently in the COMPASS database. Nearly 1000 of the plates in COMPASS have
been recalibrated using the newest GSPC-II catalog. The calibrations for individual plates look very good over a
large range in brightness (8th or 9th magnitude to 19th to 20th magnitude).
·
Improvements
to the pipeline procedures along with the vastly improved GSPC-II have resulted
in the extremely high production rates - over 800 plates recalibrated in
December to date! The new calibrations,
performed on VMS, will need to be applied to the COMPASS data. This should begin early in the New Year.
·
Analyzed
the DID and GSH files from a set of over 2000 processed plates from various
surveys. Created IDL utilities to overplot subsets of data and identify the
plates associated with outlying points. Continued to enhance the analysis
software provided by OATo staff to include additional keywords from the DID and
GSH files.
·
The HSM
system is reaching online disk capacity and while this system is fully operational,
there are ongoing conflicts with file migration performing concurrently with
COMPASS production tasks. These
technical issues are normal for large-scale storage systems and we are
continuing to develop configuration strategies for expanding the online
capacity.
·
COMPASS
production object matching has completed processing of 804 plates.
·
The
year-end delivery for GEMINI will proceed over the next week with the export of
the GSC-2 catalog from COMPASS.
·
Software
development for COMPASS population with external reference catalogs is
progressing with GSPC-2.
CALIBRATIONS: Photometry (GSPC-II and
DSS-I and -II)
·
Identified
and corrected a minor bug in the HEADERSOL task introduced by a change in
calling sequence of one of the subroutines it calls.
·
Provided a
copy of the latest GSPC2 and associated software to OATo staff.
·
Proper motions have been derived for a million stars in a 3 x 4 degree
region around the open cluster IC 2602.
No cluster stands out from the field population in the vector point
diagram, but cluster members taken from literature are being matched to the
GSC2 results to find the cluster proper motion in the vector point diagram.

S1. Low
priority program to rescan crowded fields (|b|<30) originally done with 25
micron scans. The total number of S
scans includes the 2 for the LMC and SMC plus 4 others with |b|>30 performed
for research or STIS BOP support.
Another 30 plates have been added to replace those that were repaired
before inclusion in DSS-I.
·
S2. This
survey is an on-going low level-of-effort collaboration between the STScI and
the AAO. About 25-50 plates have been added in each of the past few years.
·
S3. Low priority
scans of the POSS-I -24 deg and -30 deg zones.
·
S4.
Includes recent scans of better grade plates.
